Lithuania’s energy independence guides into development of the green hydrogen sector
The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania prepared the Development of the Hydrogen Sector in Lithuania 2023-2030 draft guidelines focusing on strengthening energy independence by developing local renewable energy and prioritizing green hydrogen.
“This is the first document regulating the development of the hydrogen sector in Lithuania. Hydrogen can help reduce the damage caused by industry, transport and energy sectors to our planet and achieve a climate-neutral economy by 2050. At the same time, it can also be a means for Lithuania to achieve energy independence. Having until now imported energy resources from other countries, with the creation of the hydrogen energy sector, Lithuania not only has the opportunity to produce the necessary energy resources itself, but even to become their exporter”, says Deputy Minister of Energy Daiva Garbaliauskaitė.
The strategic directions provided in the guidelines, how the hydrogen sector will be developed in Lithuania and contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the industrial and transport sectors, will help them to switch to climate-neutral solutions. It also defines the role of hydrogen in energy as a means of balancing peaks in the production of renewable energy sources (RES) and using this excess energy to produce pure hydrogen or convert it into other high-value energy products. The production of hydrogen by electrolysis will be one of the essential measures that will create conditions for the further development of RES capacities in Lithuania.
It is planned to establish two green hydrogen valleys in Lithuania, which will aim to develop production capacities, integrated projects of the industrial, transport, energy sectors, production of components of the green hydrogen value chain (for example, electrolyzers), create a favorable investment environment and exploit the country’s geographical situation and intersystem connections.
