Foreign direct investment in Lithuania in 2020

  • According to the data of 2020 December 31, accumulated foreign direct investment (FDI) in Lithuania amounted to 23.9 billion EUR
  • Compared to 2019 December 31 December FDI increased by 15.7 percent.
  • Mostly investments grew in Vilnius (21.1 per cent), Alytus (13 per cent) and Panevėžys (12.4 per cent) counties, and largely decreased in Marijampolė (15.6 per cent) county.

FDI per capita in Lithuania, compared to 2019 December 31, increased by 15.6 percent and amounted to an average of 8.6 thousand EUR per capita. In the capital region there were 21.8 thousand EUR FDI per capita, while in the region of Central and Western Lithuania – 3 thousand EUR per capita.

Investors from Germany (27% of total FDI in the region), Sweden (18.3%), Estonia (14.5%) and the Netherlands (7.7%) invested the most in the capital region, while the Netherlands (10.9%), Denmark (10.6%) and Germany (10.5%) invested mostly in the central and western region.

The major investments in Vilnius region took place in financial and insurance activities (EUR 9.3 billion), wholesale and retail trade; repair activities of motor vehicles and motorcycles (EUR 1.8 billion), real estate activities (EUR 1.7 billion) and information and communication activities (EUR 1.7 billion). Central and Western Lithuania leads with investments in manufacturing (EUR 2.5 billion), real estate activities (EUR 787.6 million) and wholesale and retail trade; repair activities of motor vehicles and motorcycles (EUR 560.1 million).
