Vuosaari bioenergy heating plant will be completed during the next heating season

Insta has entered into an agreement with Sumitomo SHI FW for instrumentation installations and instrumentation materials of the CFB boiler plant to be delivered to Helen.

Sumitomo SHI FW will provide a circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler for the new bioenergy plant to be built for Vuosaari. The plant has a fuel heat input of 220 MW, and as its main fuel, it will use wood chips that are obtained as a forestry by-product.

The delivery includes the boiler plant and its auxiliary equipment, flue gas cleaning, and the boiler house. The instrumentation consists of all the field equipment and regulating units, enclosures, cabling from the field to the automation system, and a voltage supply for the equipment. In the busiest phase of the project, in spring and early summer, the work is done by over 20 professionals. Insta’s share of work starts in mid-February and March of 2022 and will continue to the end of the year.

The construction of the bioenergy heating plant started in spring 2020 with excavation, which has proceeded on schedule. The plant will be completed during the heating season of 2022-2023, and at the same time, Hanasaari’s coal-fired power plant is being switched to emergency operation.

On a Finnish scale, Vuosaari’s bioenergy heating plant represents a medium-sized power plant. Its district heat production covers a quarter of the coal usage of the Hanasaari power plant, which will be closed by the end of 2024. The rest of the heat production of Hanasaari will be compensated by heat pumps, the storing of energy, and heat trade with Vantaa Energy.

Sumitomo SHI FW is a global provider of energy and environmental technologies and services, and energy storage technologies and services.
