Sholarships: do they resolve the lack of engineering talents
The message from business communication we constantly get is that there is a permanent lack of talent: IT specialists, engineering and technology specialists. Although we are used to hear that for quite many years now, the perspective of starting a career and becoming a desirable specialist still doesn’t attract enough numbers to the universities.
In response to business needs, the city of Klaipėda is awarding scholarships to talented new students in engineering, technology and IT for the second year in a row.
Businesses award separate scholarships to high school students as well. Recently, the partner of Klaipeda University WESTERN SHIPYARD GROUP has established scholarships for those who have chosen Bachelor of Maritime Transport Engineering. Students get 300 Eur every month throughout the whole study period.
Yesterday the Ministry of Economy and Innovation announced the continuation of targeted incentive scholarships for STEM students in the regions. They are going to get 200 Eur per month for the entire study period.
“It is very gratifying that we really have a number of financial incentives for prospective students. Unfortunately, both this and last year, the Ministry’s incentives are announced when most graduates have already chosen their studies. Some of last year’s newly comers only accidentally found out that they were eligible for this scholarship”, – says Alina Šoparė, the Education project manager at Klaipėda ID, focusing on the bad timing of financial promotion of STEM studies.
